Abstract

In the third quarter of 2013, Taiwanese contract manufacturers' shipment volume totaled about 48.8 million units, up 5% sequentially and 31% year-on-year. This is mainly ascribed to the increased sales of Apple's iPhones in the third quarter to around 33.8 million units, representing an 8% sequent growth. As for other branded customers in the third quarter of 2013, a mid-range model manufactured for Nokia has begun mass production; Taiwanese makers' shipments for Sony's old models have continued with two new models slated for mass production in the same quarter. Looking at China's branded smartphones, orders placed by Xiaomi continued to account for the largest share in the industry's shipment. Orders from other Chinese brands are expected to increase considerably beginning in the fourth quarter of 2013. As for BlackBerry, according to its financial results for fiscal 2014 second quarter, the company suffered from the inventory pileup and an uncertain future and thus dragged down Taiwanese makers' shipment in the third quarter.
